What are Modernism and Post-Modernism?

  Modernism

      The dominant cultural movement in the post war era

  Consists of the belief that everything is abstract and individual, yet remains functional in society

  Broke society away from the traditional, realistic ideas to abstract ideas open to interpretation

  Texts tend to be counterpoint texts (multiple perspectives) and unstructured

  Texts tend to be minimal rather than elaborate, fitting concept of mass production

  Emphasised humanism and the ways humans were a part of (and responsible for) nature, over nationalism.

  Challenged the role God played in the world

  Regarded civilized people as those who were responsible for their environment, unselfish, spiritual and family-oriented.

  Texts describe dislocation from urban culture.

  Texts tend to describe sub-conscious thought and spontaneous

Post-Modernism

       Dominant cultural movement in present society

   Consists of the belief there is no absolute explanation for anything, only possibilities and interpretations

   A direct response to Modernism

   Texts are often cross-genre with multiple influences and no set way to structure the text

   Rejects boundaries such as genre distinctions

   Texts tend to be fragmented and self-conscious

   Developed predominantly from history and sociology.

   Involves the organization of knowledge. Anything which is not knowledge is not recognized

   The rebellion against consumerism and globalisation

   Acknowledges that knowledge is controlled by the individual.
